South Oxfordshire District Council
The brief
To create a new brand and campaign for the launch of the council’s joint waste and recycling service. Due to fundamental differences in the service, the deliverables had to be educational and clear.
The approach
We used existing logos from the Waste & Resources Action Programme to inform our initial design, which by using these logos would be in essence a form of recycling. A series of marketing deliverables including instructional leaflets, calendars, adverts and posters we produced and the language used was key to engaging with the public and make it seem that the council was offering simple, friendly advice. In order to test the effectiveness of these messages, a number of sessions with members of the public were organized and feedback was integral to the implementation of the campaign.
The council also organised a series of road shows, for which exhibition material was required including pop up banners a lectern style kiosk and a branded trailer. Items such as bin tape and contamination tags were also designed to be fun with messages that encouraged rather than chastised and antagonised residents.
The outcome
The communications worked extremely well, with excellent feedback from the public at the road shows that the council organised, as well as a low level of calls with queries to their call centre. The take up of the service within the district also increased, so reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
